She stepped on a landmine. A medico in her party put the injuries into stasis crystals. Her lower legs are capped with extruded bipyramids, her right femur is reinforced with a sphere, and her pelvic cavity has a toroidal brace to keep her waist in one piece. Her abdominal organs were shredded.
Normally a person in her situation would take advantage of hospital services to recuperate slowly and regain their former health, but Lotte is an in-demand pro endeavorist -- some might say "compulsive quester" -- who believes she is obliged to finish all kinds of time-sensitive tasks.
If you don't intend to impersonate someone, it is perfectly practical for a civilian to buy a new body -- extraordinarily expensive but fast. This being an intimate and technical experience, it is only offered through wealthy private cosmetic facilities with ethical, educated, routinely inspected operators. But somehow or other this very dubious and immature person has got on the machine. They're done for when Lotte puts in the complaint!
Q. I hope she ended up getting a new body for free.
She did, and it was very beautiful and strong.
(Her right arm is gesturing ahead of her with a cup of coffee.)
